When to use a random number from 1 to 4
A random number between 1 and 4 is perfect for multiple-choice moments: quiz answers A–D, four seasons, four suits of cards, four players at a board game, or four corners of a classroom in the “corners” game. Spin the 1–4 wheel to choose which group presents first, which quarter of a worksheet to review, or which of four friends pays for coffee. Tabletop players use it as a d4 replacement for damage rolls and random directions (1 = north, 2 = east, 3 = south, 4 = west). Each number has exactly a 25% chance on every spin.
There are 4 possible results in this range: 2 even and 2 odd numbers, including 2 primes. Over many picks the average result settles near 2.5. If you allow repeats, the chance of drawing the same number twice in a row is 1 in 4, and after about 3 picks a repeat becomes more likely than not.

Pick a number between 1 and 4
To pick a number between 1 and 4 fairly, every one of the 4 numbers must have the same chance. People asked to “think of a number” are not random — they avoid the ends of the range and favour odd numbers and sevens. This tool uses crypto.getRandomValues with rejection sampling, so there is no bias toward any number. Results like 1, 3 and 4 are exactly as likely as each other.
Nothing is stored or sent anywhere: numbers are generated in your browser.

Frequently asked questions
Is this 1–4 number generator truly random?
It uses your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator with rejection sampling, so each of the 4 numbers has exactly a 25% chance.
Is this the same as rolling a d4?
Yes, the odds are identical: 1, 2, 3 and 4 each come up 25% of the time. For animated dice, see the d4 dice roller.
How can I use 1–4 for a multiple-choice quiz?
Map 1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C and 4 = D to randomise answer positions or pick a random question type.
Can I change the range?
Yes. Edit the Min and Max boxes in the generator, or open the main random number generator for any range.
