When to use a random number from 1 to 3
Three options is the classic decision size: three movies on the shortlist, three takeaway menus on the fridge, three kids who all want the front seat. A random number 1-3 picker gives each option an equal one-in-three chance. Number your choices, spin, and follow the result — or use it for games that need a d3, like rock–paper–scissors decisions (1 = rock, 2 = paper, 3 = scissors), tabletop roll tables and choosing which of three doors a player opens. It also works for splitting a group into three teams by having each person generate a number.
There are 3 possible results in this range: 1 even and 2 odd numbers, including 2 primes. Over many picks the average result settles near 2. If you allow repeats, the chance of drawing the same number twice in a row is 1 in 3, and after about 3 picks a repeat becomes more likely than not.

Pick a number between 1 and 3
To pick a number between 1 and 3 fairly, every one of the 3 numbers must have the same chance. People asked to “think of a number” are not random — they avoid the ends of the range and favour odd numbers and sevens. This tool uses crypto.getRandomValues with rejection sampling, so there is no bias toward any number. Results like 1, 2 and 3 are exactly as likely as each other.
Nothing is stored or sent anywhere: numbers are generated in your browser.

Frequently asked questions
Is this 1–3 number generator truly random?
It uses your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator with rejection sampling, so each of the 3 numbers has exactly a 33.3% chance.
Can I use this instead of a d3 die?
Yes. A d3 is usually simulated by rolling a d6 and halving; this generator gives 1, 2 or 3 directly with equal odds.
Can I generate several numbers between 1 and 3?
Yes. Set “How many numbers” and untick “No repeats” if you want more than three results.
Can I change the range?
Yes. Edit the Min and Max boxes in the generator, or open the main random number generator for any range.
